The Children’s of Mississippi Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders includes three components: education, research and health care. We specialize in training pediatric hematology and oncology caregivers, conducting medical research and providing care for children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and blood disorders.
Clinical education
Physicians are fellowship-trained and board-certified in pediatric hematology/oncology. The Children’s of Mississippi Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders offers the only clinic in Mississippi dedicated to the care of children with cancer of blood disorders.
Faculty and staff offer:
- Advanced diagnosis and treatment for patients.
- The opportunity to participate in clinical research aimed at improving outcomes and the quality of life of children with cancer and blood disorders.
- The state’s only bone marrow transplant unit that offers hope for many children with cancer, sickle cell or other diseases.
Faculty and staff follow:
- Children, adolescents and young adults with any cancer.
- About 800 children, adolescents and young adults with sickle dell disease.
- Bone marrow transplant patients.
- Patients in the Children’s of Mississippi Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders outpatient clinics, in the neonatal intensive care unit, and in the pediatric intensive care unit at Children's of Mississippi.
Education
The division:
- Offers the state’s only pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship program, an ACGME-accredited program that lasts three years.
- Oversees cancer and blood disorder education efforts for medical students, nursing students, pediatric residents, and pediatric hematology/oncology fellows.
- Provides continuing education for physicians and medical caregivers.
Research
The division:
- Is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group, the world's largest children's cancer research collaborative with more than 210 pediatric cancer programs.
- Participates in oncology clinical research protocols aimed discovering new treatments for childhood cancer, improving survival of childhood cancer and improving the lives of children with cancer during and after therapy.
- Participates in hematology clinical research protocols aimed at decreasing the burden of sickle cell disease, improving treatment for it and improving the quality of life for children with sickle cell disease and other blood disorders.
- Collaborates with translational scientists in the UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute.
